What is a lightning rod? What are the Types and Principle of Operation

A lightning rod is a device designed to protect a structure from lightning. It is used to prevent damage caused by lightning. Lightning rods are installed on the roofs of structures located in a high position or at other high points. These devices prevent lightning strikes and reduce the damage that may occur to the structure.

The principle of operation of lightning rods is based on preventing lightning from striking and damaging the building. There are two basic types of lightning rods:

1-Air Lightning Arrester (Overhead Lightning Arrester): It is the most commonly used type of lightning arrester. This type of lightning rods, due to their high resistance, form the core of lightning, forming a conductive path with air. This way allows the lightning to reach the ground safely. Air lightning arresters usually consist of a metal rod mounted on the roof or structure.

2-Earth Lightning Arrester (Grounded Lightning Arrester): Earth lightning arresters are used to prevent lightning from striking and to ground energy. There is a conductive tip placed at the top of the structure, and this tip prevents damage by transmitting energy to the soil layer when lightning strikes.

Lightning rods usually consist of several basic elements:

Conductive Tip: Mounted at the highest point of the structure, this tip forms the core of the lightning.

Leading Wire: This wire, which extends from the conducting end to the ground level, is used to transmit the energy of lightning to the soil layer.

Grounding System: A metal rod or network located at ground level safely transmits lightning energy to the ground.

Lightning rods are used to prevent fires, structural damages and other damages that may occur as a result of a lightning strike. Regular maintenance and tests should be carried out to increase the safety of structures and minimize environmental hazards.
